I photographed some portraits of Michelle and Starr out at Stony Creek Metropark north of Detroit over the weekend. I think we picked the hottest and most humid day of the year so far to shoot. I though we might melt! They were both good sports as I dragged them down a steep hill and next to a creek with the heat, humidity and bugs. At least we were in the shade. They wanted a nature, forest feel to the images and I think this location worked well. The lighting was simple. The sun as a backlight. One strobe with a shoot through umbrella that I sometimes turned off. And in a few shots a speed light down low to add to the suns backlight effect and a little rim light. This light was also not on for some of the frames. I don’t use many presets in Lightroom and like to keep my post processing simple and minimal most of the time on portraits. But this time I used a preset from Lightroom Killer Tips that Matt Kloskowski created called Fairytail Glow or Wedding Fairytail. I then tweaked the preset to my taste some. It was used on the first 3 images.

So Jack turned 70 last Saturday (Happy Birthday!) and his family wanted to get some portraits done of him with his 1940 Ford. They said they wanted a rural location so I shot the photographs of Jack with his car at Island Lake Recreation Area. I knew one of the picnic areas would not very busy late in the afternoon and the light should be just want I wanted and it was! I added in some off camera flash and we were good to go. I really like how the tones of the car play off the green.

I had a blast photographing Molly last night in Ann Arbor. She was real easy to work with and we ended up shooting for over 2 hours!

I photographed Pete and Katie’s kids today and how cute. When I pulled up to their house and saw the backyard I was glad Lily wanted to go out in the light rain with her rain coat and umbrella. These shots are just about what I imagined in my head. I love when that works out like that. I shat the photos with natural light and a small amount from a flash shot through a white umbrella. The first shot of the baby is real simple but I think thats what I like about it so much. Just sitting on the floor with some beautiful window light.
